Show notes for Episode #5:

In this episode I explain how basic this podcast is going to be and compare it to techtv's "Call For Help" and "The Screen Savers" The focus on the podcast will be for mac newbies.
Apple released 2 new software updates last week. Security update 2007-006 update and OS X update 10.4.10.

Mike's segment: Mike shows you a free way to capture a video of your screen using imovie and camtwist. Get camtwist HERE

Problem #1: When the power button is pressed on a macbook it comes up with the menu: Restart, sleep, cancel and shut down. Is it possible for the default highlighted selection to be changed to sleep instead of shut down.

Solution #1: There is no way to change the default selection for when you press the power button to anything other than shut down. To put your macbook to sleep quickly either shut the lid (the white light on the front will pulse to let you know it is sleeping, or you could press and hold Apple, Opt and the Eject buttons, the macbook will then sleep.

Problem #2: Flash quits working on your macbook when you load a program like camtwist or your on a flash based website.

Solution #2: You will probably have reinstall flash if closing your browser does not fix the problem. Then go to the flash website HERE and reinstall flash for your macbook there using the intel based version.

Show notes for Episode #4:

Sorry about the new macbook video tutorial episode #1 being poor in quality, I have finally found a program that allows me to zoom in and have the screen capture follow my mouse around and record with better audio quality. The program I will be using is called "ishowu" and it is available at ShinyWhiteBox for a fee of $20.00 but free to try.

Michael Gillen from Aeiz.net shares his experience buying his first mac.

Problem #1: Your fan keeps running at full speed.

Solution #1: Check activity monitor for a stuck program that might be hogging up the cpu process.

Problem #2: You accidentally delete the networks folder from your sidebar in your OSX windows.

Solution #2: Go to the finder bar at the top of your screen and click on finder, preferences, and put a check on the network icon, this also works for hard disks, idisk, servers, removable media, desktop, home, and applicatons.

Problem #3: The macbook screen dims and OSX tells you to press and hold the power button down to shut down the macbook.

Solution #3: This is usually caused by bad memory installed in your macbook. Some 3rd party memory can cause this problem and it is important to buy good quality RAM. To fix this take out the new 3rd party memory and but the old factory memory back in. Go to Crucial.com and get some good quality RAM for your macbook there.

Show Notes for Episode #3:

My information from episode #1 was incorrect on Leopard being pushed back till January, it still seems confirmed for an October release. So thats better news.

WWDC started Monday the 11th in Moscone West, San Francisco, CA. They will be giving away free beta copies of Leopard. Steve Jobs keynote is available for download on apples website where he demonstrates some of the new features of Leopard inluding stacks, spaces, time machine, the new dock, new finder, ichat, etc...

Problem #1 You hit the eject button to eject a cd or dvd and nothing happens.

Solution #1 You are probably not holding down the eject button long enough. You need to hold down the button for a few seconds for the disc to eject. This is to prevent accidental keystrokes resulting in discs being ejected.

Problem #2 Itunes fonts get garbled and messed up on the library headers.

Solution #2 Click on the itunes music store and then click back on library to fix the problem. Hopefully a new itunes update will fix this.

Problem #3 You try to use a program and you get the beach ball of death.

Solution #3 Wait for a minute or two for the program to respond before giving up. Then if after a couple of minutes the beach ball of death doesn't go away, try and hold click on the program in the dock and select quit or force quit, and if that doesn't work open your activity monitor by opening the applications folder, then utilities, then activity monitor. The program thats causing the hang up will be using almost 100% of the CPU process and will be shown in red. Click on the program and click quit process at the top. The program will then close out.

Iphone (june 29th) confirmed by At&t's newest iphone commercial. If you haven't seen the commercial yet go to youtube and search for Iphone 29th.

Problem #1 Cannot connect to router via your internal airport extreme using WEP.

Solution #1 When you enter your WEP password key in hexadecimal form make sure you put a $ in front of the password. ASCII passwords don't require the $, and airport base stations recommend 13 characters for compatibility with other systems.

Problem #2 How do you delete or uninstall a program?

Solution #2 There is no add/remove programs as in windows on OSX, but apple makes it even more easier to uninstall program you don't need anymore. All you have to do is find the programs icon and drag it to the trashcan. This will erase all the programs files and settings, as each program icon contains all files necessary for that program to run.

Problem #3 How do you calibrate the macbook battery?

Solution #3 Charge up the battery all the way, allow the battery to stay fully charged for at least 2 hours, disconnect the ac adapter, let the battery run down and let the macbook go to sleep, allow the macbook to sleep for at least 5 hours, then reconnect ac adapter and fully charge it again.
