News:

Merry Christmas everyone from the Macbook Podcast.

In Apple news: Apple has updated Security Update 2007-009 to v1.1, available in 10.4.11 PPC and Universal and 10.5.1 Universal flavors.

According to Apple's documentation, the new version does not affect the security content of the original update, but addresses an issue that may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit when browsing to certain websites.

Apple initially released Security Update 2007-009 earlier this week, which included a host of security updates for both 10.4.11 and 10.5.1.

windows centric tips for switchers: 1) There isn't a Start button. You can drag applications to the Dock for quick access, or even drag the entire Applications folder to the right-hand side of the Dock. Right-click on it, and you'll get a menu listing the contents. 2) Applications can be started upon login by going to Accounts in System Preferences, clicking login Items and adding them to the list. 3) Installers work different in OSX, most applications can be installed by just dragging and dropping them into your Applications folder (applications can ultimately reside anywhere on your hard disk, but it pays to be tidy). Installers are mostly used when it's necessary to set up large volumes of files or application resources (fonts, libraries, etc.). 4) In Windows you can’t move the task bar icons, but in OSX, you can Command click them and move them around. 5) Warning!!! Don't try moving a folder on top of another with the same name because OSX will replace the entire folder, i.e., it will not merge both folder's contents and will cause you to lose your data.

In Apple news: Apple has released QuickTime 7.3.1, which addresses a number of security issues. This update is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users and addresses a widely publicized security flaw in QuickTime revealed by Symantec.

GarageBand 4.1.1 update introduced an unexpected feature -- the creation of custom (free) Ringtones for the iPhone.

An Apple support document details the procedure:

To create a custom ringtone
1. Set up a cycle region that covers the area you wish to use in the GarageBand song. Note: This area must be 40 seconds or less in length.
2. Once the cycle area has been set, choose Share > Send Ringtone to iTunes.

Requirements
- GarageBand 4.1.1 or later
- iTunes 7.5 or later
- iPhone with software version 1.1.2 or later

Apple introduced Ringtone support into iTunes and the iPhone in September of this year. The feature, however, was originally limited to converting iTunes Store songs at the price of $.99/each. A number of workarounds and 3rd party utilities have since appeared to fill the gap for free custom iTunes ringtones, but each iTunes revision has caused issues with these tools.

DejaMenu displays the current application's main menu as a context menu when a key combination is pressed.

This is particularly useful for people using multiple monitors. Since the Menubar only appears on a single monitor, it is awkward to use applications on a different monitor. DejaMenu solves this - just press the configured key combo, and a copy of the Menubar is right there for your to use.

Once installed open System Preferences, Universal Access preferences, and make sure that the "Enable access for assistive devices" checkbox is checked.

The first time DejaMenu is launched, you will be prompted to enter a key combination to activate DejaMenu. Make sure that you pick a combination that isn't used by you in any other applications. The key combination must include modifier keys, and the cmd (apple) key is required.

At any point, if you double-click on the DejaMenu icon, you will be presented with a menu to configure, get help for, or quit DejaMenu. This menu is also accessible through the DejaMenu menu as well (as the last menu item).

Note that DejaMenu does not have a Dock icon, or Menubar of it's own.
